Our Koru Whanau Art

Have a look at our Koru art. These Korus represent our families. Each Koru is a person in our family. All our families look different. Some of us have just a mum or a dad or both. Some of us included our grandparents because we spend alot of time with them and they help us out a lot.  Can you guess who's family is who's just by looking?

And can you guess how we made them a bit see through?

We are learning to use positional language to describe where an object is.

This week we are learning to describe where something is by using positional language. We read Scattercat by Lynley Dodd to help us brainstorm some words. We were so inspired by this that we ended up coming up with nearly 10 more extra positional words all by ourselves! Aren't we clever!

Discovery Wk 6

This week for discovery we were focusing on RESPONSIBILITY.

One way we can show responsibility is by taking care of the things that we choose to use.
That means we
- use the things properly.
e.g. not hitting playdough with the container lid because it might crack and break.
e.g. not throwing building equipment around.
e.g. only using the scissor to cut paper we are supposed to be cutting.
- put away the things we use.
- not snatching or grabbing things of other people.
Comment: That is not respectful.
e.g. it could break or rip it.

Some of the activities we had this week were:

  • Construction - Mobilo and Blocks
  • Chalk outside (We did some really awesome pictures but Miss R forgot to take a photo of them... oops)
  • Playdough (We did a great job of being responsible at this activity!!! An another oops though on the photo... it was a busy session.)
  • Pastel and Dye (We used white pastel on white paper to draw a picture and then painted it with dye. It appeared like magic.)
  • Dress Ups (We had to be extra responsible with this because Ms Jury let us the dress ups. Thank you Ms Jury.)
  • Paper craft (We got to make lady bugs. Miss R wouldn't tell us how to make them, so we had to figure out how to do it ourselves. We were super resilient and two of us figured out how to do it!)
  • We also had fun creating butterflies for ART but thats a work in progress!

Literacy: Rain Poetry/Umbrella Art

Our rain poem was inspire by all the rain we had during the flood week. We liked how each sentence started the same way except the last sentence.

We decided to create our own poem. We got into groups and created a sentence each, then we all came back together and chose the once we like the best. Here is the we made as a class.

Finally we made our own poems. We were going to put them in our poem books to take home but then we got a super idea of putting on our wall. So we created a rain background (cloudy/stormy) and hung them up in our classroom.

Rory said "It felt a little bit cold."
"It felt like air was coming out of it." said Poppy.
"When I was bang it it felt like I have hammering a piece of wood. I could hear it in my ear. It was hurting my ears." said Olivia.

We are learning about being Patient.

In Super 7, we are learning how to be patient.
We know we are being patient when we are
·       Waiting for your turn.
·       Not talking, just watching and listening
·       No shoving or pushing
·       Staying calm
·       Not moaning or groaning.

We had to be patient when we were making our poppies because there was only 4 paste brushes and 18 of us. We did a great job!

Updated:
Here is our poppies. On Thursday, we folded a piece of paper in half and drew a 3 on it. We cut out the 3 and opened up the paper. It looked just like a poppy! We painted the poppies with paste and dipped them in glitter. On Friday, we add the stem and we wrote our names on the stem our selves. We also added a black circle in middle. We drew around milk  bottle tops and cut it out. We had to staple our poppies because the glue wouldn't stick to the glitter.

Wednesday, April 22, 2015

We are learning about the Anzac Poppy.

In Super 7, we are learning about the Anzac Poppy and why it is special to us.

We read a book called "Anzac Day- Why We Wear Poppies" written by James Locke. We decided that poppies help us to remember people that died in wars a long time ago. We also learnt that Anzacs came from Australia and New Zealand and that Poppies are red with a black spot in the middle.

Maybe you should read the book too. See what other information you find out from it or if you have read it before, what new information you can learn from re-reading it.

The day you think about all the people that died. – Leon
Long ago England fought New Zealand and everyone died.  – Ella
It’s when people wear poppies on their T-shirts and they wear it at school. – Poppy
Anzac day means when we celebrate the Anzac people who died and we say sorry. – Olivia
